Valued for its association with a wide variety of health benefits, the acai berry is quickly becoming one of the most popular and sought after health supplements on the market today and is even revered by some health experts as a wonder food. As a result, it can currently be found as a key ingredient in a wide variety of health foods and nutritional products including juices, energy bars, powdered supplements, and even ice cream. It’s even become a common ingredient as an additive to fresh juices and smoothies at many juice bars and gyms.

The acai berry is a product of the acai palm tree of the Amazon Rainforest. The fruit itself grows in bunches much as grapes or bananas do, and the berry itself is round, dark, and of a purplish-blue hue, its look reminiscent of that of the familiar grape or blueberry. The mass of a single berry is made up of a large central seed surrounded by a pulp that possesses a distinctly unique tropical flavor. Much like coffee berries, acai berries are not picked and eaten raw directly from the acai plant itself. They are harvested and then processed, the acai itself extracted from the outer pulp portion of the berry.

Northern Brazilian natives living in the Amazon basin region have used and valued this berry for hundreds of years due to its healing properties and high nutritional value. They swear by its abilities to treat, or even cure, a wide variety of common ailments including but not limited to insomnia, digestive issues, and even sexual dysfunction. Now in recent years, encouraged by the overall reports of the astounding good health within these Amazon societies, people in other parts of the world are jumping on the bandwagon and finding out all about the benefits of adding acai to their diets for themselves.

So what makes acai such an incredible super food anyway? It’s incredibly high in a number of nutrients known to promote good health, long life, and a strong immune system. Acai berries are high in essential and omega fatty acids, the “good fats” you often hear about for their ability to lower your cholesterol level. They are also known for their high level of antioxidants, which have been clinically proven to fight premature aging, cardiovascular disease, and even some forms of cancer. Acai berries are also rich in other essential nutrients including amino acids, electrolytes, and vitamins A, B1, and E. They’re even rich in fiber, something sorely lacking in many diets.

The addition of acai to the diet has been reported to enhance the health of users in a variety of ways and is not known to have any negative side effects. Not only does it lower cholesterol and prevent disease, but it also possesses the ability to relieve a number of common ailments, including arthritis and depression. It also improves strength and stamina, and helps promote weight loss and the burning of excess body fat. The high level of antioxidants helps improve the condition of skin as well, even when it comes to issues such as unsightly and uncomfortable warts. A recent University of Florida study even found that acai has the ability to kill leukemia cells, so it has potential as a cancer preventative, too.

Although acai is something relatively new to many areas, it’s quickly become very popular and is thought to have a potential that is nearly infinite when it comes to promoting better health, treating disease, and helping to foster a stronger sense of overall well-being in people everywhere.
